Real Talk: What's Bumming Me Out Online Right Now

In this episode, I am talking about “the online industry” … dun dun dun!

From the perspective of someone who’s been around for a loooong time, things have gotten a little weird and wild online for those of us in the course, creator, coach, and business “space”.

Today I’m sharing openly and starting a discussion about some of the things that are just bumming me out online right now. From the constant pressure to outdo yourself every month, the cultural shift from long-form value content to teeny short form content, and the egregious copycats and shameless regurgitation of other people’s IP.

I love the online space, it’s full of so much opportunity and connection and magic! But some of this stuff really frustrates me and I wanted to share in case you can relate too.

Of course, I share tangible action steps for protecting your personal peace and creating more of what you DO want to see in the world with your work.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • What I love about the online space even though there’s a lot of frustrating things right now

  • How I feel about the one-upping and every new thing having to be the “biggest thing ever” (it’s exhausting)

  • What makes me sad about the cultural shift to only wanting short-form 60-second clips

  • How I’ve dealt with fears around becoming irrelevant or forgotten because I don’t have it in me to become an instagram superstar lifestyle influencer

  • The #1 most frustrating thing that I refuse to remain calm and cool about: copycats, IP infringement, and the rampant plagiarism in this space is truly the WORST

  • Copycat Coach Culture: how weird it is to me that people all look and sound the same as their coach and each other

  • How we communicate with our clients about how to use the templates we include in our programs so that this doesn’t happen (we want our clients to sound and look like THEM, not like ME!)

  • The social circle “cool club” online and why I don’t play that game even though it’s cost me (with examples)

  • Action steps I’ve taken to stay centered and grounded in what I am doing without getting caught up in all the annoying stuff

Inside Our "Hybrid" In-Person Live Event Strategy

Close your eyes and imagine…the year is 2019. We're all hosting fun live events and completely oblivious that the joy of being in person is about to be put on pause for a looong time.

I’ve told the story before about how at the end of 2019, after a very successful live in person event, I was ready to go ALL IN on in person events as a strategy! Obviously that didn’t happen. We all learned to pivot - and for us that actually led to the genesis of one of our most successful strategies we’ve ever implemented, The Virtual Conference strategy that we teach our clients (in Profit Architecture, which you can learn about here.)

You can hear more about how we adapted from live events to virtual conference events in my 2020-2021 recap episode

As I’m publishing this, it’s 2023 and live events are making a comeback (slowly but surely).

Recently, a client asked me how we had hosted live events “before”. She was trying to decide if she should host a “delivery event” - designed for her existing clients to attend. Or if she should create a “sales event” - inviting non-clients and making an offer to join her program.

I explained that we had always done a “hybrid” strategy where we seamlessly do BOTH (of course I did, I am kinda the “hybrid” person).

Her mind was blown - she didn’t even know that was an option! 🤯

So I created a little mini-training on how to host “hybrid” style in person events that are valuable for your existing clients, AND enticing to not-yet clients.

Today I’m sharing that mini-training with you on the podcast!

I’m not a live event expert in any way, shape or form. I haven’t hosted a live in person event since 2019. But I’ve done it before and people keep asking for my experience, so here it is.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • The strategy for hosting successful “hybrid” sales AND delivery events

  • How to design an event that is valuable for both current clients and not-yet-clients

  • Whether or not you should charge existing clients for tickets (and some real-talk about how expensive in person events are to produce)

  • When we pitched our offer during the event (hint: don’t wait til the last day!)

  • What our offer was for existing clients and new clients (and special pricing strategies for in-person events)

  • The type of content I taught at our event that appealed to both existing clients and soon-to-be clients

  • Why we started small with less than 30 people in the room, while still being profitable after expenses

In this episode, I am sharing reflections and lessons learned from our recent Profit Architecture course launch! If you love the behind the scenes details, you’ll love this episode.

This launch was full of lessons and a-ha moments: it surprised me in the best way possible! I went into this launch as my most imperfect self. I had a very simplified approach and it ended up being all for the best. This ended up being one of our best course launches, not only in terms of results, but more so because of how we approached this launch and kept it simple and spacious.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • The context leading up to the weeks before the launch

  • The best things we did leading up to and during this recent launch, and what I’d do differently next time

  • The recurring theme of simplicity and “enoughness” through this launch with lots of examples

  • How this launch was different than the strategies we’ve mostly been focused on the last few years

  • Examples of how I adapted our classic launch strategy for my energy and capacity right now

  • My content strategy for the pre-launch period

  • Why I did some things for the launch last minute, on purpose

  • Thoughts on your launch being congruent with your offer messaging

  • How we created a spacious pre-launch and cart open experience even with a tiny team

  • My daily “routine” during the launch

In this episode, I’m sharing what a “Why Didn’t You Buy?” Survey is, why you should use them, how to put your own together - along with the email and survey templates to make it easy for you to implement today!

Whether you just had a live launch or have an evergreen funnel for your course, program or digital product, you should be asking non-buyers why they chose not to join you so you can gather helpful feedback. You can do the Why Didn’t You Buy survey as a post-launch survey, or add it to your evergreen funnel sequence after the sales window.

Use the examples and templates provided below and send your own today!

➡️Would you do me a favor real quick? If you chose not to join us for the most recent Profit Architecture intake, I would love to know more about your decision in this 2-minute survey right here: https://airtable.com/shrMdxZGB7EIhi5Q0

Your feedback helps guide what we create for you - including free workshops, how-to guides, podcasts, our paid programs and more.  Thank you in advance!

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Why you should send a “Why Didn’t You Buy?” survey either after your live launch or after your sales sequence in your evergreen funnel

  • How to take the helpful feedback and update your sales process and assets

  • Why it’s key to use discernment when reviewing responses and my personal experience with “hard to hear” feedback

  • The survey questions I ask and why (and the 1 question I added this time that I don’t normally ask)

  • The simple template I use to email the survey to our audience

  • Your next steps to implementing a WDYB survey into your post-launch process and funnels!
